ART of TAMBOV
Nikolay Shevchenko
Nikolay Ivanovich Shevchenko was born in the village of Shauliha, Kiev province, in 1857 and died in Tambov in 1933.
Shevchenko was a free listener to lectures of Academy of Arts. He studied in the class battle from B.P. Villevalde.
The artist was a member of the Tambov Art Lovers Society from 1907 and up to his death.
In his works we can see the features that are typical for the realistic movement. The Realists depicted everyday subjects and situations in contemporary settings, and attempted to depict individuals of all social classes in a similar manner. Classical idealism and Romantic emotionalism and drama were avoided equally, and often sordid or untidy elements of subjects were not smoothed over or omitted.
The artist moved from the 'ideal' to ordinary. As a portraitist, he liked painting his loved ones, family and children. As the landscape painter, Shevchenko went out to the provinces in search of the 'real' Russia.
