It's worth emphasizing that the real distinction between landscape as ornament and landscape as an automous genre, is not the presence of absence of human figures, but rather their size and function. In true landscape painting, human figures - whether dispersed or foreground - exist merely to indicate scale and evoke the viewers empathy.
It remains unclear how landscape will develop in the new century. Will the demands and disciplines of Academic art stimulate a return to traditional, naturalistic canvases, or will the fashion for abstract and discursive art - involving figures and actions, as well as modern delivery methods like video - continue to dominate? One wonders what type of landscapes Nikitin would be painting, if he was alive today.
